Top Load Washing Machine Smells like rotten eggs, mildew, or even sewage! - This can be really frustrating.

In this short article, I will share with you my solution to this problem, step-by-step.

WARNING: The information I am sharing is based on my personal individual experience. Following my instruction is your responsibility and only yours :).

ere is the deal.

First, we are going to clean the machine, and then I will show you how to prevent the smell from returning.

Clean the washing machine

First, you can always go with an off-the-shelf washing machine cleaner. But if you are reading this, it means you are looking for a different solution.

I am going to show you how it can be done without bleach/industrial chemicals.

The steps for cleaning the machine are:

Wipe the door seal/gasket

Wipe it clean! especially in the fold. It gets smelly and mold may grow in there. You can you a little dishwashing soap or only wet cloth.

If you use chemicals and cleaning solvents make sure to wipe and wash all the residues so it won't damage your clothes.

Clean the filter

Make sure the filter is clean and water run freely through it. Here you can also use chemicals and cleaning detergent, but make sure you wash it well.

Clean with Citric Acid

Citric acid is a useful cleaner for other usages around the house.

Run the matching on a HOT cycle, with citric acid so it cleans the interior from scale and mold. It will also keep the heating element clean and lasting longer.

How much?

30 Grams or 1 Ounce.

Remember -  better 10 regular cleaning cycles every year with a little citric acid than 1 cycle with too much acid.

Clean with Vinegar

White vinegar is also a great solution for cleaning around the house.

Same principle as with Citric acid.

How much?

200 ml, Or one cup. I leave you the conversion to gallons :).

Clean the detergent drawer/compartment

Just get it out and clean it. Nothing complicated here.

Make sure there is no mold in the hidden places and under the drawer.

Now that our matching is clean, here is a list of tips to

Prevent smells in your Top Load Washing Machine

  1. Leave the door open after every cycle.

  2. clean it regularly, using the same methods I offered above. every month or so. or 30 cycles.

  3. Don't forget to empty the machine right after it finishes.

  4. Leave the detergent drawer open after every cycle, if possible/relevant.

Well, that's it!

This should significantly improve the situation and reduce smell so your clothes smell like a spring day and not like rotting socks!:)
